playing with my phone

at the park

Remember I said I'd been working on Ethan saying "may I please have..."? Ethan and I were at the park the other day when a little boy about 6ish wanted to get by Ethan and use the slide. He came up to Ethan and said "can I do this?" and Ethan jumped up and said "yes, you may!" The older boy was a little shocked and said "whoa, how do you know how to talk?" I guess it is a little funny to hear a 2 year old use correct grammar :)

If you think of it, please pray for my family. My dad's dad is currently in the final stages of pancreatic cancer. Steve, Ethan and I were planning on a trip to South Carolina to visit my parents this weekend, but it appears that we may have to postpone that trip. My dad went up yesterday to be with him, and I got to video chat with him and say hi to my grandpa, and that I love him. Not sure if he heard me or knew what was going on, but very neat to have technology to be able to do that.

cute stories

I was out of town for the weekend, and my little guy missed me a whole bunch. He's been stuck to my leg ever since I got home. When I got home I was showing Steve my sunburned legs and Ethan was pretty concerned. He looked at me and said, "is your bum not feeling very well, mommy?" I told him that it hurt a little because I got a sunburn. He asked me "did you forget to put scun scream on it?"

Today I was getting ready to feed him lunch of left-over bbq chicken and rice. Steve was telling me that he hadn't eaten very much of it last night and wasn't sure he'd eat it again today. I put it in front of Ethan and he yells "wow! Chicken and rice!" and then proceeded to devour the entire plate, all by himself, along with the rest of my corn on the cob, and then ask for more chicken and rice by saying "may I have some more chicken and rice?". Goes to show you never can predict anything.

We've been working on saying "may I have... please?". It had been going like this: Ethan - "SNACK! I need a SNACK! Get me a SNACK!" and then I'd say "how do you ask nicely?" and he'd respond quickly "please". I decided that I'd let it slide long enough, and now I make him start over with "may I..." and he'll change his tone quickly. I will probably be reminding him of it forever, but hopefully one of these days it will stick. And he's usually really good at saying "thank you". I'm going to be a big stickler for manners in my kids. I got it from my mom. I remember her constant reminders to say thank you :)

Tomorrow is Steve's birthday! Ethan and I went to the store this morning to pick out daddy's present. I knew what I wanted Ethan to give Steve, but I didn't want to get it too early because I also knew that surprises don't mean anything to Ethan. So when we got to the sporting goods section and I let Ethan pick out a children's tennis racquet to "give to daddy for his birthday" Ethan was over the moon. He carried that thing around the whole store and told the check-out girl "this is tennis for daddy's birthday, so we can play tennis together". He came right home and showed daddy, he was so excited. Then he got super frustrated because he couldn't hit the ball to save his life :) Hopefully he'll catch on a little as the years go by. We're celebrating Steve's birthday tonight as a family, heading out shortly for Davanni's pizza. Yum!

new sunday school class

Ethan moved up from the nursery to "beginners" class this month.  This past Sunday was his first day there and throughout the day yesterday he kept telling me "the guy was behind the curtain".  I had no idea what he was talking about and would just respond "oh, wow" and didn't think much of it.  Then finally when he said it again as I was putting him to bed it jogged a memory that I had of his classroom - there is a little puppet theater in his new classroom and there's a curtain that the teacher can stand behind and do a puppet show that they incorporate into the lesson.  So I asked him "was this at your new class at church?"  Ethan said "Yeah, it was. Chris was behind the curtain. And Grace was behind the curtain. And Ethan was behind the curtain - nope." So I said "oh, you didn't go behind the curtain? Did you just sit quietly and listen to the teacher?"  Big pause from Ethan and a very serious, "no, I talked".  I'm not one bit surprised :)

a few stories from lately

Yesterday one of our fish (that has been acting sick all week) finally died (or was so close to it that I called it and decided it needed to be flushed).  We came home from the mall of america around lunch time and saw it lying on the rocks and barely moving.  I let Ethan scoop it out of the tank and walk it to the toilet and flush it.  I thought that he'd think it was pretty cool.  He did.  And now he kind of wants our other fish to die so he can scoop them out and flush them as well.

The other day at lunch I noticed that Ethan was only eating bites out of each of his animal crackers, and not eating the whole thing.  I started trying to get him to finish the other halves, and he handed one to me and said "you eat his bum".  He's been really funny with snacks that have pictures on them.  He won't eat these graham crackers with spider man pictures on them because "I don't eat spiders, that's gross".  I can't convince him that they're just pictures of spider man.  If you ask him if he likes spider man, he totally does.  He just doesn't want to eat a graham cracker with a picture of him on it.  So funny.

We went to the fireworks in our town.  Ethan loved them, but it was just so late.  It was after 10 when they started, so after a few minutes he started to ask to go home and go to bed.  I'm guessing in future years he'll love them and appreciate the chance to stay up late more :)

We also had a wonderful trip to Steve's aunt and uncle's lake house just a couple hours away on Sunday.  A day filled with family and fun at the lake.  Ethan could have stayed out in the water all day. I can't imagine if we lived on the water, he'd never come inside.

One last funny one.  One afternoon while I was putting Ethan to bed he was chattering away, and then threw up his hands and said in true teenage fashion "whatever".  2 going on 22 :)

Time for some fireworks!
